Speakers

Justin Bere, Founder bere:architects.  One of the UK's foremost Passivhaus practitioners, Justin Bere has over 20 years post-qualification experience as an architect and is a leader in the adoption of the Passivhaus standard in the UK and a passionate advocate of ecological and environmental design.  His practice has won numerous design awards and has recently completed two certified Passivhaus low cost social housing prototypes in Wales including the UK's first zero carbon passivhaus and London's first certified Passivhaus in Camden. The practice is working on numerous other domestic and non-domestic new build and retrofit Passivhaus projects including new houses, a community centre and two government-funded Technology Strategy Board refurbishment projects for social housing providers.  These projects will be independent assessed and, by the adoption of the Soft Landings protocol, findings will be shared with those closely involved in the projects, as well as the wider community. bere:architects are offering practical solutions to the Government's energy efficiency targets that have the potential to provide a route map to the UK's 2016 carbon reduction targets.

James Hulme, Director of Policy & Research at Prince's Foundation.  He led the Natural House project at the BRE Innovation Park which completed on site in April 2011.  The Natural House demonstrates that the road to the best energy performance in residential build lies through sound construction, a coherent thermal envelope and consideration of the supply chain and longevity of materials.  The press release for its opening in June 2011 is here: https://www.bre.co.uk/newsdetails.jsp?id=749

From 2010 he has worked as a consultant to Local Authorities and Housing Providers on energy efficiency and more latterly on designing of Passive Houses.

Kym Mead, Passivhaus Manager and Senior Consultant at BRE.  He manages BRE's Passivhaus business within the BRE Group.  He completed an internship at the Passivhaus Institut in Darmstadt and is accredited as a Passivhaus Certifier and Designer.  He joined the BRE with 15 years experience working in residential architecture.  His principal responsibility is to lead a team within the ‘Low Carbon Design' department whose main objective is to provide consultancy, certification and training in the Passivhaus and EnerPHit standards, as well as consultation on the higher levels of the Code for Sustainable Homes and BREEAM Standards.   He represents UK Certification on the Passivhaus Trust's board of Directors and is also a Director of his own company ‘MEAD' (Mead Energy Architectural Design) where he combines his energy and sustainability expertise with his architectural background.

Bill Dunster, Principal at ZEDfactory.  Prior to forming ZEDfactory, Bill was an associate architect for Michael Hopkins and Partners working on the award winning Nottingham University Campus.    He also developed the environmental strategy and façade design for Portcullis House, this followed 4 years of research collaborating with the leading environmental consultants in Europe, including Arups, CSTB Nantes, Christian Bartenbach and Conphoebus.  Bill has also taught at the Architectural Association and Kingston University and regularly speaks at a range of seminars and conferences all over the world.  In 1995 Bill built his own house, Hope House which is a prototype low energy live/work unit in which he and his family now live.
