There are major UK market opportunities for companies with energy efficiency solutions, assisted by regulations, technology obsolescence, increasing energy costs, social pressure and public awareness.  However, the Green Deal, with its prolonged arrival and remaining uncertainties, seems to attract all the coverage and political emphasis.  The reality is though, with or without the Green Deal, the UK market is adopting energy efficient solutions in volume and the important factors will remain to underpin this attractive market for some time to come.  Businesses can set out their strategy in order to benefit from this, with any opportunities coming from the Green Deal becoming an upside.

Speakers:

 

Sally Hancox, Director of Gentoo Green

Sally joined Sunderland City Council in 1993 before transferring to Sunderland Housing group and then became Director of Gentoo Green in 2007.  She developed Gentoo’s Environmental Strategy and built a nationally respected division within three years.  She has been the driving force behind Gentoo’s sustainability, which includes schemes such as: a retrofit programme of Gentoo’s current housing stock, being part of the first ever UK trials of the Government backed Pay As You Save scheme and carrying out a new scheme to reduce energy use and hopefully fuel bills as well as carbon emissions in Gentoo’s housing stock via Energy Saving Bundle’s.  She is on a number of forums including: the steering group for the Green Deal Finance Company, the policy committee for UK-GBC, the BRE National Refurbishment Centre and the National Housing Federation. 

Graham Manly OBE CEng FCIBSE, MInstR, MASHRAEGraham Manly was HVCA (now B&ES) President in 2009/10 and CIBSE President in 2004/5.   He has served as Chairman of the HVCA Technical Committee for 15 years and been involved with the work of HVCA and BSRIA for over 30 years including many of their technical publications. He is currently the Chairman of the National Skills Academy for Environmental Technologies.  Graham has spent  over 40 years in the delivery side of the industry specialising in technical, research and educational matters and is now responsible for technical innovation at the Gratte Brothers Group, a London based multi service design and build contractor.

Senior management of companies and other organisations involved directly or indirectly in the property, construction, estates and building sectors through providing services and solutions in the context of the low carbon future for the built environment.  This can include builders, renewable energy solutions providers, heating engineers, building service engineers, sustainability consultants, support service providers and advisers.

  

                                              

SummitSkills is the sector skills council for the building services engineering sector, which incorporates the electrotechnical, heating and ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration and plumbing industries. It is an employer-led organisation which focuses on identifying the current and future skills and training needs of the sector. By setting National Occupational Standards and qualifications, and through working with Government and training providers, SummitSkills ensures that opportunities to develop the required skills are available to employers. SummitSkills works closely with a number of Government departments in relation to skills and the low carbon agenda. We led on the Skills and Knowledge chapter of the Microgeneration Strategy and are playing  a key role in the skills agenda for Green Deal. We work hard to represent the views of employers in formulation of Government policy.

The Building Services Engineering sector is undergoing radical change, in particular as a result of the Government’s evolving Zero Carbon Homes policy.  This presents new opportunities and challenges for the sector as well as all other participants in the built environment. To facilitate a better understanding of the current and emerging political and regulatory landscape and the subsequent arising opportunities and challenges, SummitSkills commissioned the Zero Carbon Hub to produce an accessible guide summarising current policies in the low carbon market with a particular focus on the building services sector.

 

The Zero Carbon Hub is an industry body charged by government with facilitating the development of the Zero Carbon Homes policy and is at the forefront of the low carbon policy agenda.  The combination of Zero Carbon Hub and SummitSkills is therefore very well placed to demonstrate how businesses can prepare for the future of low carbon homes. 

 

The guide covers the key points of changes to the Zero Carbon Homes definition, Parts L, F and J of the Building Regulations, the Feed-In-Tariff, the Renewable Heat Incentive, the forthcoming Green Deal, the Code for Sustainable Homes, the new National Planning Policy Framework and where this leaves existing local plans. It concludes with a summary of the new skills required to engage in the ever-moving arena and ensure your business is best placed to profit from the new and exciting opportunities.
